80th Anniversary of VE Day
On May 8th, 2025, a group marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe. On May 7th, 1945, the unconditional surrender of Germany to Allied Forces was signed and May 8th was named VE Day - Victory in Europe Day. The ceremony was held at the Eternal Flame at Mountain View Cemetery where many WWII veterans are buried in Fields of Honour. Legion and Ladies Auxiliary members gathered with a colour party, pipers and drummers, and bugler John Van Dyke. Mayor Hyggen and a number of City Councillors attended, as well as a representative from MLA Neudorf’s office. Henry Heinen, originally from the Netherlands, was guest speaker, and Geoffrey Brayne did a fly past in his Harvard MK IV.
